After 2 years of being in this PhD program, I have come to realize that all of my conversations with professors follow this cycle:

Me: I have a new research idea. It is X.
Prof: I don’t understand how that is interesting.

Me: I have a new research idea. It is X.
Prof: I don’t understand the question.

Me: I have a new research idea. The question is X and I can answer it by doing Y.
Prof: Have you seen this paper? They answer that question only in a better and more interesting way.

Me: I have a new research idea and to my knowledge, nobody has looked at this before.
Prof: Great! Why haven’t you done any real work on it?

Me: I have been working on this new idea and this is what I’m finding.
Prof: This isn’t interesting.
